The Craft of Surfboard Making

It was an everyday morning. Got up, made myself a nice cup of yerba mate, brushed the ol teeth, and it hit me right there smack in the face.... I need to make myself my very own surfboard. Started and finished by myself, Kameron Brown. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was flooding every thought I had. I just wanted to do it so bad.

Went home and ordered a planer that very day. A Hitachi- P20SB. Spent $100 and that's about as good as it gets. They run anywhere from 70$ to a couple thousand...? Found out my future planer is going to be a Skil 100.... Can pick a nice one for around $1000.

I really wasn't sure what I was getting myself into... I needed a shaping bay with lights, sanding blocks, screens, sureforms, etc., etc. Then I had to ask myself, "who's going to glass it and how much was this going to be?" I didn't know really anything about shaping or glassing. I've fixed a few dings and seen a couple shapers do a few passes with the planer but, I really didn't know anything else?

Decided to call up a good friend Maxx Dexter. He has been shaping for a bit of time now.. He learned the trade from one of today's top shapers, Robby Kegel. I loved the look and shapes of all his boards. Very clean boards with great flow. He told me to get my things together and were going to get supplies. " I'll help you throughout the process, but I want you to do everything from start to finish.. and yes that means glassing it Kameron"

Bashams was my next stop. 10'2" Green-B (1" basswood), 25 feet of fiberglass, 1-gallon laminating resin, 2-quarts sanding resin, 1-pint catalyst, buckets, stirring sticks, squeegees, and the list goes on. I'm finally ready...?

Yesterday, August 27th, 2010, I dove into what was my 1st day crafting a surfboard. Pulled out the blank, set it on the racks, combined curves and certain aspects of my favorite boards to now have the most amazing template known to man. (: hahah

For today, I just drew up and cut out the board. More to come with this project. No rushing. I'll keep updating and writing about my travels with this wonderful piece of foam! Can't wait to get on the tip.

A.S.R. & Sacred Craft

The yearly A.S.R. and Sacred Craft show. What a deal they put on this year. Somehow the both were in the same building during the same weekend. I think it was a very smart thing. Some of the best companies in action sport and of course, surfing, we're all packed and combined into these two trade shows.

The A.S.R. was a private trade show. For those who don't know, A.S.R. stand for Action Sport Retailer. It is held for retailers and store buyers to get informed with new and old companies in the industry. Everything from half naked women handing out energy drinks to very serious business men.... just trying to get some work done? hahaha

Sacred Craft was a public show that anyone could attend. Over 7000 people came to this event. This was the biggest Sacred Craft I have seen. Very organized and well thought out expo. Guayaki-Yerba Mate, Matunas Wax, and Bing surfboards was there along with what felt like a thousand other surf related companies. Row after Row of the radest stuff being crafted today. Not to metion a "Shape-Off" between todays best shapers. A Plexiglass shaping bay for everyone to see, shaping contest. Some of the most insane ideas were mowed into a foam masterpiece. Matt Biolas won the Masters Shape-off. Perfection. For the Young Guns shape off, it was an invitational of 4 shapers : Tyler Warren, Ryan Burch, Gary Strahle, and DJ Cane. First place goes to Ryan Burch with a perfectly balanced board with overall good flow and was very symmetrical. There task was to hack at an 11 foot blank. Shapers could shape any size or shape of surfboard.

Heres some photos.

You Ess Open.

US OPEN
Huntington Beach, California

First time to the US open for me. The most infested, populated, single spot, on earth..... ever. I'd like to say about 500,000 + people were there today. Have never seen so many people. Different people at that. Everything from the very fit, gorgeous young women to the very, fat, hairy, old men. I did not see a single avaiable parking spot the entire time. Christian, Hannah, and I parked a good 15 minute inland walk from PCH. Felt like we were in fountain valley. hahaha

Anyways, for years the US Open was focused on performance surfing. They've had a peformance longboarding event for as long as I could remember and today, August 7, the US Open has dropped the performance side of longboarding and added an invite only, traditional loggin' contest. More focused on the roots of where surfing originated from. "You can’t wear a leash, you have to ride a single fin, your board has to weigh more than 12 pounds…" Sounds good to me. (:

The invitees included: Joel Tudor, Christian Wach, Harrison Roach, Alex Knost, Tyler Warren, Cody Simpkins, Herbie Fletcher, David Huuhiwa, Kevin Connelly, and Tyler Hatzikian. Total of 10. Personally, these guys, are the most influential surfers known to longboarding today. There are obviously more but in the grand scheme of thing, for a contest, they are a very good choice of 10.

I had the best opportunity to watch and have my best friend, Christian Wach, surf in this event. Made this whole thing a bit more special and memorable for myself.

Six Chirty The Trestle

Decided to have another Trestle sesh this morning. 6:30 ... parking lot.. be there. Some good times here lately! I've acquired an amazing way to carry a log to the trestle..... On top of your head. Like Sudan women. Very smart. thanks mike black (:

Kinda like this.

Makes the walk a lot easier. I would ride a bike but.... sometimes you gotta just walk it. Great exercise.... not the greatest of fun. hahah Here's a few clips of our tip this am. Oh, and a huge thing i forgot to add..... I saw the biggest dolphins known to man kind this morning. I get out of the water after session 2, take a few shots and gosh darn-it the things just jumped out of the water. By far, the best wave catchers, and wave surfers. Amazing huge and powerful creatures.. enjoi

Teekly Trestles Tip Trip

Late morning. Out the door about 9:30 a.m. Meet the old buddy, Resse Bell at the trestle parking lot. 2 spicy chicken sammies, Guayaki-lemon elation, good vibes, and we're off! Get to the beach and it's absolutely amazing. Somehow.. someway.. Hung out for a bit, watching friends Mike Black and Kris Karlo get some insane rides.

Nothing better.
